A wig is an artificial covering of hair for all or most of the head, of either synthetic or natural hair, worn to be stylish or more attractive.

It is also a similar head covering, worn in one’s official capacity, as part of a costume, disguise, etc. A toupee, topper or hairpiece is also described as a wig.

The History of Wigs

The earliest recorded evidence of wigs was in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians used to shave their heads to prevent lice infestation….a most prevalent occurrence of their time. It seems, however, that although they shaved their heads they would have preferred to have hair as they began wearing wigs, in part to shield their heads them from the scorching Egyptian sun.

Other nations whose citizens wore wigs were the Greeks, Romans, Assyrians, and the Phoenicians. The Romans, in particular, wore wigs which were often made with hair from slaves. During the Roman Empire wealthy Roman women often wore elaborate wigs to greatly increase the volume and effect of the hairstyle.

Wigs Today

Today wigs are a regular accessory that many women will not do without. Wigs nowadays serve many useful purposes which includes but are not limited to: for convenience, to change up ones look, for hair loss. For many women, a few wigs of various styles, colours and lengths is a must.

There are many different types of wigs that for now will be divided into two categories – natural and synthetic. Synthetic wigs are made from man made materials, while natural wigs are made from human hair of different grades and quality. We will look at the differences between lace front wigs, 360 wigs and full lace wigs.

Lace Wigs

First it is wise to note that a lace wig has some or all parts of its base or cap made from lace which allows the wig to be parted and give the appearance of scalp showing. This cause the wig to look less “wiggy” and much more like your natural hair from roots to tips.

The lace wig is usually attached with the assistance of wig glues and tapes, which are applied to the front hairline area. The usual procedure for application is to clean the area with isopropyl alcohol and apply the glue and allow it to dry clear. This process is done three times then the lace portion of the wig is attached to the area where the glue has been applied on the hairline. It seems that the lace basically melts into the glue creating not only a tight bond which keeps the lace wig in place on the head but creates an undetectable hairline that is almost impossible to see.

Some lace wigs also come with “baby hair” or if not, the stylist can pluck the edged and create his or her own baby hair which can be customized and styled to give an even more realistic hairline. Once applied the lace or lace front wig can stay in place for weeks at a time and is maintained with shampoo and conditioners and other hair products.

Wig Density

The density (how thick the hair is) of a lace wig is measured as a percentage. The higher the percentage, the thicker the hair on the wig is. The most popular density for a wig is 130% or 150%. A wig with a density of 180% is very thick and much more expensive. As with hair extensions, the texture of wigs can be straight, loose wave, natural wave or curly

Lace Front Wigs

Lace front wigs can be further divided into two categories. The lace front and the lace frontal wigs. The lace front wig has a 4×4” lace portion at the top which allows side and middle partings. This piece of lace can be free part, middle part of three parts. Lace frontal wigs have a similar appearance to full lace wigs. The lace frontal
are made with lace along the front of the wig from temple to temple usually a 13×4” lace. This natural looking hairline gives the appearance that hair is growing from your own scalp. It may or may not have baby hairs along the hairline which can be customized to allow the wig to look even more like your real hair. There is also a 360 frontal.

The lace at the front of the wig can be styled and parted as the wearer wants. The rest of the lace front wig is made of strong material on which the wefts are sewn. The wig is secure and easy to wear. Due to the fact that they are very stretchy, they are extremely comfortable. Lace wigs today can be worn while engaging in activities such as swimming and exercising. Because of this they are quite a popular alternative for anyone looking to avoid adding hair to the scalp via surgical methods. Celebrities and models worldwide have been wearing full lace wigs and can attest to their true to life seamless and undetectable look. They are comfortable and your hair can breathe under the lace. Lace front wigs are more common, maybe because they are less expensive than full lace wigs.

Full Lace Wigs

Full lace wigs are made by 100% hand-tying and crocheting every hair strand onto the sheer lace. Full lace human hair wigs can have lace all around the wig. When installing, the extra lace is cut away from around the hairline before attaching. You will be cutting a hairline around your entire head. They are comfortable, durable and lightweight….technically, the best wigs you can get. Full lace wigs are the most comfortable, light-weight, and durable wig you could get. They can be pulled into a high ponytail and other up-do’s,

A full lace wig covers the entire head and the application is slightly more unique than a lace front wig. The full lace wig is attached all around the perimeter of your hairline. It is best to wear a wig cap when wearing a full lace wig, since it will be protecting your whole head.

Full lace wigs have a natural look and stay put as long as they are applied correctly. They are able to be worn during most sports activities without coming off. When they are applied correctly, only you and your stylist will know that the absolutely luxurious hair on your head is not really yours!

360 Lace Wigs

360 Degree Lace Wigs were created in 2016, They allow wig wearers to wear undetectable ponytail styles. 360 wigs are a combination of lace frontal wigs and full lace wigs. In a 360 wig, the entire perimeter is made of lace and so it is applied similarly to a full lace wig. The middle of a 360 wig might be made of the same durable material as the lace frontal wig.
